Discover the wild side of you!

November 15, 2011 2 comments

Any upcoming plans for X’mas and New year next month? Am so looking forward to festive season. Every year, this period is the best time to “officially” give oneself a break from a whole year’s of hardwork. Once again it is time for goal setting! What’s your new year resolution? Never too early to think about it now.

Past weeks have been awesome!!

One of the latest projects would be a highly anticipated interview with a young talented writer , Chris Barba from New Jersey!

(u will find his amazing articles from

Come Dec, we shall all have a chance to read about his tips in staying positive especially goals setting part to youngsters out there.

Now the highlight : First of all, Many thanks to my model Carrin and her mum Christina! For their team spirit and dare-to-try-new-experience attitude! It was a great time doing the make-over for them.

Profile 1 : Christina is blessed with fair skin. At her age, skin condition is actually in tip-top condition with little spots or pigments.

Her tip is : Start skincare young. So all these investments do pay off afterall! Together with Artistry Intensive Repair Peel masque just after 8 mins, her skin glows with radiance and foundation sets easily on her skin. Coz usually normal to dry skin has a problem with ‘cakey’ or ‘ cracky’ foundation.

PS : A pair of good eyebrows is really really important! Never underestimate!

Profile 2 : Carrin , like her mum is blessed with fair skin with hardly any outbreaks. Her only main concerns are her eyes area which start to show signs of puffiness and dark circles. Last but not least, Carrin is also aiming to uplift her cheek area, giving it a more supple & toned feeling. These can be improved greatly by a facial massage known as Guasha . (Which will be featured in upcoming post soon)

However, we both went further into a more fiery, wilder look for her. A total huge contrast from her soft nature style. A heavier touch on the grey and black shadows to give smoky eyes and red hot lip color! Viola!

Tip of the day :

Don’t be afraid to discover the wild side of you!!

Men & Make Up

October 14, 2011 4 comments

Hi Guys, do you think men need make up?

I’ve a few guy friends who are actually into concealer and BB cream. Some faithful ones even keep a full set of skincare products ranging from cleanser, toner, eye cream, repair serum, night cream to scrub and masque. Plus a good routine of supplements for their health and skin, bravo!!

Gone were those days of discrimination to guys with cosmetics, even Justin Bieber touches up sometimes. I mean come on, by putting some extra something onto your face doesn’t mean anything right? You just want to look good at the end of the day and I SALUTE you for that. By looking good, you feel good and work gets good too!EVerything just seems better ūüôā

Yesterday I was at a grooming class and trust me, nearly one quarter of the class was made up of guys. Here are some behind the scenes when they were being taught what foundation actually is. I admire their learning spirit really. For them to learn make-up and skincare products is like me learning software programming or reading musical notes. (Equally challenging!!) Haha! But really, I can’t help but giggle to myself when I see them analyzing the foundation applied onto their hands. I mean, you don’t ‘analyze’ foundations, do you? So there you go ,¬† thumbs up to these boys !

Here, we have a dragon boat coach, chef and a fresh graduate. cheers!!

They study the foundation…

And then they smell it. really meticulous.

Tips: basically you just need to choose a suitable tone. You wouldn’t want to look like Mr Bean but with a tanned neck. Usually concealers are great for your dark eye circles. But please use a proper make up remover. If you’re outdoor most of the time, never hurt to have a sunblock with SPF 30 and above, you’ll thank me when you don’t see your pigments popping out.

Freckles are cute, but when these little spots joined arms and become little patches, I can’t imagine any reason for you to smile.

If you have other good advices to share for men & make up or any interesting encounters you came across,  looking forward to hear them too!

A true CK with class

July 7, 2011 Leave a comment

Working with models from other countries helped me gain a new level of experience in my field of industry. 3 – 4 years ago when I was watching Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model TV show , I was looking at the ladies with awe and Tyra in particular with envy like any other normal girls. Never would I ever imagine myself to be in this trade, let alone work alongside with these models. Yes it sounds dramatic, but trust me, if you were in my shoes, up till now, Im still amazed by how twists and turns can happen in life.

4 good years have passed. Really good happening ones. Compare with my peers of my age, mine is totally like a Lalaland. There had been ups & downs. Twists & turns. But one thing for sure, nothing has been wasted. I give thanks to everything that happened be it good or bad. As the old saying goes : everything happens for a GOOD reason! Miracles do happen in life if you believe in them.

The night before this event was filled with excitment and anticipation. Everything was double and triple checked. Foundations, make up brushes, hair spray, skincare treatment products, tweezers etc. Apart from punctuality that makes a person credible, flexibility and adaptability are also important factors.

Despite the models’ young age , all of them display full professionalism. I still remembered asking William J and Henrique M, : are you guys comfortable with the make up and tweezing of brows?

Their reply was: “you re the make up artistes, we re the models, you do the calling. ” Amazing! Im impressed.

In my opinion, a well groomed person with a tinge of charisma is what makes a CK person. He/She may not be the most good looking chap, nor the wealthiest, but the clean – cut exterior, witty brains (note: witty ; not IQ Clever) and a humble down to earth attitude makes him/her most attractive and stands out from the rest. A true CK with Class.

Like some who will agree with this quote: It is not the branded luxurious goods that make you classy, its you who bring out the class with the touch of a luxury brand. The aura of a wise confident person who enjoys at the same time financial freedom.

Behind the scenes:

Great teamwork to make it work!

Eyes are windows to our souls~ 1000% focus needed

At the end of the day, what makes a make up artiste unforgetable and different from the rest, is the ability to touch people’s heart, including touching the hearts of these models.

In my words, I call it the ‘Magic Touch.”

A toast to a true and beautiful you!

June 3, 2011 3 comments

‚ÄúThere are no ugly women, only lazy ones.‚ÄĚ One of Helena Rubinstein’s famous mantras. She was so true! This phrase clearly gives out hope to all women out there. It does not matter if you are born with single or uneven eye lids, XL size full lips or short droppy lashes. As long as you have a will, you will have a way!

I just met a lady who truly shows the spirit to the above mantra.

When I first met her briefly during last Christmas, my first impression of her was a short-hair , spectacled middle age lady who had no make up on nor had her brows drawn. Dressed humbly in her T shirt and sandals with polished Mandarin accent, I thought she might be from abroad or probably as a Mother Tongue language teacher. To my surprise, she works for our local TV Station, in the News department, specialized in script-writing for news presenter. Next surprise came when she bought some nails polish items. At that point of time, I was amazed by her determination and that tinge of curiosity she had in her towards things. (That Ah Q spirit!)

Just last week, she text me for a make up appointment. I could not recall who this prospect was at all until I met her at Orchard Hotel.

‚ÄúSo you were the lady who bought nails products from my friend’s stall, who worked with the TV station.‚ÄĚ

The first thing I asked & said was : ‚Äú Are you ready??? Let’s go!‚ÄĚ

Meeting her reminded me of Helena’s mantra. ‚ÄúThere are no ugly women, just lazy ones.‚ÄĚ This is one hardworking client over here. Her effort to look good touched me. As long you put in effort in yourself to look good , it will bring about confidence. This feeling is priceless. Applying make up is definitely not a mask to change you into another stranger. YOU will be still you , just a better and more confident you!

‚ÄúMakeup artistes are just like fairy god mother , to help enhance what you already have in you just like Cinderella.‚ÄĚ

This petite looking lady understood that she needed professional help and spent great effort in investing in one. And the ending?? Perfect!!

Her skin was a little oily to begin with; pores were a little magnificent, eye brows were a little sparse but messy. BUT all these are just small problems. She is blessed with fair skin complexion, double eye lid and lovely lips. Just focus more on strengths and less on weakness will do. Be happier and more optimistic! Great effects will follow suit.

With good skincare products and proper cleansing steps, foundation settled down very quickly and well onto her skin. Clogged pores and dead cells were scrubbed off. Dirt and dust were cleansed off. Bacteria was sterilized by toning and skin cells were kept QQ by moisturizer.

Tip: Invest well in skin care products! They are a MUST whereby makeup might be a possible WANT depending on your lifestyle, gender, religion etc.
Both men and women should always have a basic set of cleanser, scrub, moisture intense/pore cleansing masque, toner, eyecream and moisturizer with SPF protection. For men, (I understand too), minimal ? Cleanser , scrub and moisturizer with SPF.

Next came the brows project. Excess fine hair or bush I would call it, were trimmed, shaved and pulled. Exactly like what you saw in Princess Diary. Lol!

Thank god to the invention of fake eye lashes, her eyes were further enhanced into round little mesmerizing ones. Viola~!! Good glue has to be used to avoid any possible eye infection.

Tip: Do not save on eye lash glue & lip/eye remover. A bad quality glue with unknown ingredients will lead to eye allergy, causing it to be swollen and itchy. One of the after effects is peeling and tearing. A good lash glue should be strong enough to hold the fake lashes but easy enough to be removed by lip/eye remover.

Finally some natural looking eye shadow , blusher and lip gloss will do the job!
Natural looking trend will never be out of trend.

Towards the end, I used a little of dark brown/.chocolate eye shadow to give some final touch to her eyelid for a little smoky effect. Not too heavy, just a light touch. Classy & elegant!

Tip: When doing make up for ladies who seldom apply make up, always have them see themselves in the mirror regularly to ensure that your style is in tune with their expectation and level of tolerance. From past experience, never show them the mirror only towards the end. As much as we like it, but if client hates it and could not tolerate it, it is still a failure!

I hope to meet more of these ladies like this client of mine in near future. Money is not an issue, Good Attitude towards life is the key! A toast to all ladies out there, a true and beautiful you! Thank yourself for being you!

Comments from a friend of mine : It gives her a lot of character and makes her looks very confident with herself.

Jia you li peng!!

From a normal Office Lady

To A more confident Her

During the photoshoot: ” My Team and I were :¬† looking after and taking care every single little detail, as though its our little daughter’s wedding day.”

” to treat every customer as though we’re marrying off our little girl.” is the attitude to successful beauty experience.

Great things always start with small details.

Beautiful @ 50!

December 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Regardless of age , language or religion, every lady deserves to be beautiful. As per earlier articles, there are no ugly ladies, just superbly lazy ones!

Throughout these few years, i’ve seen many ladies. All types. But I truly admire those who really take effort to groom and maintain themselves. Not the over-dose type of course. The key is Perfect BALANCE.

Sally and Huanzhen are two lovely examples. Both in their mid fifties, skin slightly dehydrated and a couple of fine lines etc. But compared to their peers who do not take care, these 2 ladies are considered the creme of the crop. Shining both inside out.

A light pat of hydrating foundation with a little warm glow blusher make the day. Most importantly, choose a warm red lip colour follow by a blend of lip gloss. Colours of outfit make a huge difference too! Given both ladies a more modern and fresher look. Viola!~

A journey with Sandpainter Erika Chen Huan

October 6, 2010 2 comments

(source taken from the Straits Times)

She¬†has the ability to capture the hearts of many with her¬†pair of hands & sands. If you’ve seen her performances before, you’ll agree with what I’ve said earlier. Featured in numerous newspaper articles, TV Interviews, Overseas Performances as well as many other medias, you may think all these came easy for her. However, behind this humble yet successful young lady, there¬†lies a truly inspiring experience and a witness to a never-say-die-attitude.

Named as one of the top scholars in China; representing Cheng Du, Erika came to pursue her studies in one of the best Universities in Singapore. Even though she secured a high paying job in the financial industry upon graduation, she eventually gave it all up to pursue her passion in Arts.

¬†I still remembered vividly when she told me how hard she worked to meet¬†different people¬†¬†in search for an opportunity. She did not mind even if it was a no-pay job as long as it had the necessary exposure. Deep down, she understood¬†that being from a totally different industry, she got to start from the scratch. (Esp if you’re from the finance sector where money never sleeps; it¬†will take HUGE amount of¬†effort to adjust to the uncertainty in income¬†when it comes to¬†the arts industry)

Her prayers were answered and sent her a mentor to guide her the way. Previously her school teacher, now her life-skills mentor. Without him, she said she’ll only be working hard blindly with no directions. Things might not be what they are now.

Sand Art was something she picked up on her own too. Amazing isnt it??? Nothing is impossible as long as you set your heart to it. You’ll naturally find ways to it.

Now, Erika no longer needs to drag her feet to work, faced endless reports or squeeze with the morning MRT crowd anymore. Everyday is a brand new day for her. Even the most simple thing like walking her dog makes her day.  Same old 24 hours but brand new freedom found like a carefree little birdie.

Of course, she’ll have obstacles and problems like any normal human beings too. IN FACT, LOTS OF THEM!!! But when your dreams and positive energy¬† are larger than your pictures of problems, you’ll be just fine.

Our maiden journey started in May 2010…

A good friend of mine introduced me to Erika who was at that time looking for a make up artiste. When I first met Erika, I had 3 major questions:

1) What exactly is sand art???? I imagined it to be something like those sandcastles we built on beach. LOL!!!

2) If my imagination was true, what kind of make up should I do for her in her upcoming performances? What kind of make up wouldn’t melt under the blazing hot sun?? LOL!!!! silly me…

3) Lastly, who is Erika Chen and why did she give up a high paying job for sandart?? (this fair lady from Sze Chuan looks more like a school teacher or librarian than someone who could sing and sand paints at the same time.

There were moments¬†when we had to race against time to do hair & make up with ”gan chiong” (anxious)¬†backstage crew who kept hurrying us from time to time; huge worries if make-up will stay well outdoors plus highly-humid weather here (thank god Artistry products saved the day); frantic times when there were no dressing rooms provided so we¬†did the¬†make-up in nearby cafe (probably with curious stares from diners as well). Most tables are filled with food, whilst ours are filled with lots of foundations, masscara, eye shadows etc…LOL! Truly unforgetable!!

So far, One of the most challenging tasks was for me to use the eye liner and paste fake lashes under the most minimal light!! (the only light source was as ‘bright’ as the EXIT light plus a little help from Erika’s Handphone) So as I¬†did the eyes, Erika held her Handphone next to her eyes, yup¬†that was the ‘brightest’ light source we had; HANDPHONE LIGHT!!)¬†¬†

Memorable Cases Together

Esplanade Performance (Theme: Sandsations)

Here, we¬†were worried if make-up could withstand the humid weather & entire day of rehearsals…in the end, all went smoothly ^^

Orange Ribbon Day Performance (theme: Racial Harmony Day)

One of¬† those special moments where I did her make-up & hair in a little coffee house while others having their dinner… LOL!

ShangHai Expo Performance

This was when my skills were put to its greatest test where light availability was very very limited. Phew!

OMG Channel 5 (one moment of Glory)

A little smoky eyes with nude look overall is one of my all-time favourites. Regular Skincare regime helps complexion looks good and radiant even if cameras were to zoom in.

Recent performance for a private event by Hermes

With event Emcee Benedict Goh

Good times always fly. In a blink of eye, this October will be our 5th working month together and come Jan will be our last as Erika will leave for New York to perform with one of the best in the world: Cirque du Soleil! (

La Nouba

“If Erika can do it, you can too!! Grab hold of your dream and fly with it!”
